Souk des Teinturiers

April 18, 2014

At the entrance to the Souk des Teinturiers or dyers market in Marrakech sheaves of brightly colored drying wool are hung over the metal gates.

As you walk through the alleyways of the souk the brightly colored wool is also hung above you, over sticks and small ladders that connect the workshops to each other.

In the dark rooms of the workshops you can see men loading different fabrics and wool into large metal vats of hot dye. You can also see a bit of magic which is that green powder dyes fabric red, red powder dyes fabric blue, and yellow powder dyes fabric purple.

Charming a salesman, I was able to climb up a steep staircase through his shop onto his roof and was able to see a spectacular view of how the drying wools spread across many different alleyways and rooftops.
