Place Jamaâ El Fna ساحة جامع الفناء Marrakech

April 25, 2014

Place Jamaâ El Fna is a square in the Medina of Marrakech. Translated, the name of the square means “the assembly of trespassers” because historically it was used for public executions and decapitations by the ruling class. Now during the day the square is filled with juice and food stalls, young men with dressed-up barbary apes, snake charmers, and other things for tourists to photograph.
When I was walking through the square, I realized that it was like New York’s Times Square or Venice’s St. Marks- meaning unusual things that do not normally happen in Marrakech, happen in this square. It is made for tourists.
